Cranford Parte 1 – Biografia de Elizabeth Gaskell

Hoje, daremos início a uma série de posts sobre a escritora inglesa Elizabeth Gaskell. Estamos participando da leitura e blogagem coletiva organizada pela Katherine Cox do Elizabeth Gaskell Blog. Para entender melhor, leia aqui o nosso primeiro post sobre o assunto e veja o cronograma de leitura.

Briografia (adaptada de Olívia Krahenbuhl, 1945)

Elizabeth Gaskell nasceu em 29 de setembro de 1810, no bairro londrino de Chelsea. Perdeu a mãe muito cedo, com apenas um mês de idade, e foi morar com a tia viúva Sra. Lumb. Seu pai, o Ministro William Stevenson, morreu em 1829.
Elizabeth casou-se em 1832, com o Rev. William Gaskell, pastor em Manchester. O interessante é que Mrs. Gaskell relata que suas bodas se realizaram na igreja de Knutsford, cujos paroquianos se reuniram para enfeitá-la de acordo com os costumes da região. Tal decoração consistia em espalhar areia vermelha no chão em frente às casas, e, com areia branca, fazer desenhos ou inscrições  alusivos à solenidade sobre a areia vermelha. Elizabeth ainda menciona que no dia do seu casamento, nenhuma casa fiocu sem decoração e dentre as quadrinhas escritas, as mais frequentes eram as seguintes:

Após o casamento Elizabeth e William se dirigiram à casa em Manchester, onde William não apenas era pastor, mas também ocupava o cargo de professor de História e Literatura Inglesas. Nos anos seguintes, embora não tivessem filhos, foram abençoados com um casamento feliz. Os dois tinham os mesmos interesses, e o marido se interessava pelos êxitos literários da mulher. Por outro lado, Elizabeth era muito interessada e colaborava das obras sociais desenvolvidas pelas esposo em sua igreja de Cross Street.

William Gaskell

Elizabeth e William tiveram seis filhos, sendo que o único filho, William, morreu quando bebê e uma bebezinha nasceu e mal sobreviveu ao primeiro dia de vida. Tiveram quatro meninas chamadas: Marianne (1834), Margaret Emily conhecida como Meta (1837), Florence Elizabeth (1842) e  Julia Bradford (1846).
